Internship FAQ

Q: How many internships do I have to complete, and how long does each internship last?

A: Students are required to complete two software internships: Internship I and Internship II. Each internship must consist of 20 consecutive working days, for a total of 40 working days.

Q: Can I complete Internship I and Internship II at the same company?

A: Yes. Students may complete both internships at the same company, but this requires approval from the Department Internship Committee. The two internships must be clearly differentiated in terms of their scope, activities, and learning outcomes.

Before starting Internship II, students must provide information about both internships and clearly explain how Internship II will differ from Internship I. To request approval, students should copy the e-mail template provided at the bottom of FAQ and fill all required fields, and send it to senginternship@sakarya.edu.tr.

Receiving approval does not remove the requirement to distinguish the two internships. The distinction must be reflected in the actual activities performed, the internship reports/notebooks, and the internship interview.

In particular, Internship I focuses on observation of software development processes and software analysis and design activities, while Internship II additionally expects the student to participate in a software development project.

Q: Can I complete both internships during the same summer?

A: Yes. Students may complete both internships during the same summer period after the sixth semester. However, both internships must independently satisfy the applicable requirements. When they are performed at the same company, their scope, activities, and learning outcomes must be clearly differentiated.

Q: When can I complete Internship I and Internship II?

A: Internship I may be completed at the end of the fourth semester, while Internship II may be completed at the end of the sixth semester. For the first internship, the Faculty Directive requires the student to have completed all courses from the first four semesters within their program.

Q: Can I complete an internship while I am taking courses?

A: No. Students taking courses during the fall, spring, or summer term cannot undertake an internship while the relevant teaching period is continuing. Internships are normally carried out outside teaching and examination periods.

Q: What kind of company or organization can I complete my internship at?

A: The internship must be carried out at an organization operating in at least one fundamental area of Software Engineering.

Examples include:

  • Software companies
  • Information technology departments of companies or factories
  • Bank headquarters
  • Public-sector IT centers
  • Telecommunications companies
  • Automation companies
  • Universities
  • TÜBİTAK

These examples are intended as guidance and are not exhaustive.

The workplace must also have at least one qualified engineer whose professional field is related to Software Engineering.

Q: What types of work are not accepted as a Software Engineering internship?

A: Activities that do not provide appropriate Software Engineering experience are not accepted. The department specifically states that the following are not considered valid internship activities:

  • Sales
  • Hardware installation
  • Software installation
  • Documentation work that does not involve programming

Q: What kind of work should I perform during Internship I and Internship II?

A: Internship I is intended to provide detailed observation of software development and related processes, as well as experience in software analysis and design activities. Internship II includes these activities but additionally requires the student to participate in a software development project.

Suitable areas include, but are not limited to:

  • Mobile application development
  • Embedded systems programming
  • Management Information Systems
  • ERP, SAP and e-commerce applications
  • Software performance testing and analysis
  • Data mining
  • Computer graphics and game programming
  • Database applications and management
  • Computer vision and artificial intelligence
  • Web programming
  • System programming
  • Computer security and cryptology
  • Cybersecurity
  • Computer-assisted control systems

Q: Do I need approval before starting my internship?

A: Yes. The internship placement must receive the required approval before the student begins the internship. The Internship Acceptance Form, approved by the relevant institution and containing the internship dates, must be uploaded to the Sabis Internship System and approved by the committee. Students cannot begin their internships or have their internship insurance procedures completed without the required approval.

All internship-related procedures must be completed through the Sabis Internship System

https://staj.sabis.sakarya.edu.tr/

All students undertaking an internship, including students who are already employees or civil servants, must have the required internship insurance procedures completed. Students without insurance records will not be admitted to the internship interview.

Q: What are the requirements for my internship notebook?

A: The department requires the internship notebook to:

  • Be prepared in English
  • Use original sentences
  • Be completed by hand
  • Contain at least 20 pages
  • Describe the student's daily activities

The notebook must accurately reflect the work and applications performed during the internship. Notebooks that do not reflect the actual activities performed will not be accepted.

All pages must be signed by the responsible engineer. The first and last pages must also be approved and stamped by an authorized workplace representative.

Q: When and how do I submit my internship notebook and Internship Evaluation Form (SDF)?

A: The internship notebook must be uploaded to the Sabis Internship System within 10 working days after the internship ends. If it is not uploaded within this period, it will not be evaluated. The Internship Evaluation Form (SDF) must also be completed and stamped by the workplace. The approving person's name, title, and position must be clearly stated.

The student must upload the SDF within the same submission period as the internship notebook. The internship notebook cannot be evaluated unless the SDF has also been uploaded. The documents do not need to be physically sent to the committee by post.

Q: How is my internship evaluated, and when will the internship interview take place?

A: The Department Internship Committee evaluates the submitted internship documentation and, where applicable, conducts an oral evaluation or interview. The workplace's evaluation through the SDF is also taken into consideration when determining the internship grade. The oral evaluation may be conducted within 10 working days from the beginning of the academic year following the period in which the internship was completed. Students should follow the department website for the announced interview date and attend on the specified date.

For students who are about to graduate, the committee may conduct the oral evaluation earlier.

Q: What happens if my internship is unsuccessful?

A: If the internship is evaluated as unsuccessful (YZ), the student must repeat the entire internship. Successful internships are converted to YT in the student's transcript.

Q: Can I complete my internship abroad?

A: Yes. Students may undertake an internship abroad through Erasmus+ Internship Mobility or through an internship independently arranged by the student. For internships abroad, approval from the Department Internship Committee is required. The internship must comply with the department's implementation principles and the Faculty Internship Directive.

Q: Can a previous internship be counted if I transferred to the university?

A: For students who transferred horizontally or vertically, previous internship experience may be accepted for a maximum of 20 working days, subject to the decision of the Department's Adaptation Committee.

The student must apply with documentation showing:

  • The name of the internship
  • The institution or company where it was completed
  • The internship dates
